Kieran forced the inner door open while Mae nursed her injury from where the emergency door had clipped her. The emergency lights were on, dim red light barely penetrating the gloom. The two moved forward slowly through the reception area. A large room, maybe 10 meters to a side, could fit dozens of waiting patients as well as the front desk staff.
The two quickly scouted the areas. No bodies, no signs of people. The computer terminals were still receiving power from the emergency systems that powered the lights. Kieran sat down at one of the terminals while Mae positioned herself at the other. In lock step, they scoured the data disks on the terminals, looking for any clues about the lock down.
Over their suit-to-suit comm channel, Mae broke the silence. "This is interesting…"
"Hrm," grunted Kieran. He looked over towards her. "What's that?"
Mae tapped on the console screen. "One of the airlock security alarms logged several attempts to access the door - not our door. Different one. Earlier this morning. Just after 0200 local time. Then the log says something about an unrecognized data format. A minute later it opens with a valid passcode."
"Maybe the person just forgot their passcode? Middle of the night, tired, needed to pick something up they left in the office. Menders can be forgetful." Kieran chuckled. He wasn't sure if he was convincing himself or not.
"Guess it could be - not much else here."
Kieran leaned over and tapped her shoulder, pointing at his terminal. "Maybe not? About 20 minutes after that, the power generator on the maintenance level started to decrease output. I'm not a fan of coincidence."
"That lines up with this journal entry, two shift guards and the on-staff junior engineer were dispatched immediately." She turned and looked at Kieran.
He punched some more keys and his terminal rendered a rough diagram of the facility. " Looks like the generator is a few levels below us, we can take the elevator straight down and find the engineer."
Mae perked up, "Let's be about it, then."
